I got the following from Avira support and it worked. A permanent fix is being developed

Please follow the steps below:

- Open the Avira Control Center and open the Configuration menu (this can be
made by clicking on the F8 key from your keyboard or choose the Configuration
tab from the Extras menu)

- in Configuration -> PC Protection -> System Scanner disable Registry scan
and press ok to save configuration

- scan the computer using the following scan profiles:

1. Scan for rootkits and active malware

2. Local Hard Drives
